Phobia & Fear

spiderPhobia and fear…

I find Phobias and Fears an interesting subject, we sometimes confuse the two concepts, it’s best to understand the true emotional response that you have.

A fear should be termed as a reaction that you wish or chose to avoid.

A phobia administers a reaction that the Phobic person might interpret as being literally frightened to death.

As therapist’s we look to clarify the root of the emotional response, often finding there is none, the response is a learned response…

So parents be aware of how you portray your own fears and phobias… a visual reaction is easily learned by children…

I was recently asked to help a member of our armed forces, the problem was real to them and because of the embarrassment, the client wanted the issue dealt with away from barracks.

This client had an extreme Phobic reaction to spiders… just the thought of a spider brought on feelings of anxiety, loss of self-control and dread.

Now, this person was very comfortable with dropping out of planes, laughing in the face of a bullet and embodied the word… fearless…

Until the “S” word… now if the spider was as big as me and armed, I too would be petrified, but oddly, our Soldier felt that would be better than the thumb nail sized spider in the corner of the room…

The Soldiers military training had changed the reaction to what danger and fear represented…

During Hypnoanalysis the root was found, it wasn’t even of spider origin… it turned out to be a  misinterpreted learned response from childhood.

After a few sessions the phobic responses stopped, a new automatic response had been learned.

So if you find yourself in a jungle with a Soldier that speaks knowledgably of the spider life around you… It’s just possible that we have met…
