Summer’s Ending, and So Is Your Mood?

Summer’s Ending, and So Is Your Mood?

You know that feeling in late August when the light starts changing? Not dramatically, just… earlier. You’re driving home and it’s dimmer than it was last week. Someone mentions “back to school” for the hundredth time. And somewhere in your chest there’s this low hum of dread you can’t quite explain.

I hear this a lot from clients, usually around now. They’ll say something like “I don’t even know what’s wrong, I just feel off.” And honestly? Nothing’s wrong with them.

Why This Time of Year Gets Us

Nobody really talks about it, but the shift from summer into autumn messes with a lot of people. It’s not just missing the sunshine either.

Part of it is simple biology. Less daylight means your brain makes less serotonin, and that’s the chemical doing a lot of the heavy lifting for your mood.

Then there’s the other stuff. Maybe summer was meant to be your reset and it didn’t quite land the way you’d hoped, so now there’s this extra layer of disappointment sitting on top of everything. Or the school run’s back, the routine’s back, and with it the sense that you’re not really allowed to slow down anymore. And somewhere underneath it all, even before the clocks go back, part of you is already bracing for winter.

It’s Not Just “Missing the Sunshine”

A lot of people write this off as a bit of a mood dip. Fair enough, sometimes that’s all it is. But for others it’s something with a proper name, Seasonal Affective Disorder, and it can mean low energy, trouble sleeping, and losing interest in things that normally light you up. It doesn’t arrive all at once in December either. It builds, quietly, from about now.

So if last autumn or winter was rough for you, there’s a decent chance you already know where this one’s headed.

Don’t Just Wait It Out

I get why the instinct is to put your head down and push through until spring. Most of us were taught to cope quietly. But mood dips like this are so much easier to work with early, before they’ve had a few months to properly settle in and start shaping how you see everything else.

That’s really the whole point of reaching out now rather than in January.

I offer counselling and hypnotherapy that comes to you, in your own home, across Dorchester, Bournemouth, Poole, Shaftesbury, and out towards Yeovil too. No waiting rooms. No driving across town in the dark after a long day. Just support that fits into your actual life, not the other way round.

Whether it’s low mood, dread about the months ahead, or something you can’t quite put into words yet, we’ll figure out what’s going on together, using whatever mix of talk therapy, hypnotherapy or EMDR actually helps you.

Let’s Talk Before Autumn Sets In

You don’t have to wait until you’re deep in it to ask for help. If the end of summer’s already stirring something up, that’s your cue, not a reason to wait.
